What is the timing belt?

The timing belt of the car is responsible for ensuring synchronization between the crankshaft, the camshaft and the injection pump, it is important not to confuse the timing belt with the auxiliary belt or also called the accessory belt.

In general, it is an element of the car to which we must pay attention, although due to its long durability we often neglect its maintenance. However, it is of vital importance to monitor its condition and change it as prevention, since its breakage can cause serious consequences on the engine.

Three different types of distribution can be differentiated:

  • Distribution by gears: It is the least used and does not usually have maintenance
  • Chain distribution: Some vehicles use this metal chain system because it does not usually require replacement, although it is necessary to perform maintenance to the tensors and skates.
  • Timing belt distribution: It is the most common system and requires monitoring and maintenance to avoid breakage.

The only way to know if the belt is in poor condition is with a visual inspection.

How often should the timing belt be changed?

Normally, the replacement timing is indicated by each different manufacturer, it usually ranges between 80,000 and 160,000 kilometers but they also recommend a maximum of years of operation. The substitution should be carried out when one of the two events mentioned above are close to happening.

What happens when the timing belt breaks?

The engine shuts down and irreversible damage to the top of the engine occurs. The pistons get in touch with the valves resulting in bent valves, crooked camshaft, damaged piston tops, bent connecting rods, etc. The cost of a repair for breakage of the timing belt can range between € 1000 and € 3000, which is much more expensive than replacing the timing belt. For this reasons and the damage it can cause to your car, it is essential to carry out a maintenance of the timing belt and change it following the replacement intervals indicated by each manufacturer.
